Why do they call it Mississippi Pot Roast?

It is said that a woman from Mississippi created this recipe. There are a few different versions of it floating around the internet but the majority of them are pretty close to the same. The fact that it is so simple and so delicious caused it to become wildly popular and the name stuck!

Why is Mississippi Pot Roast not Tender?

For the record… I have never cooked any version of a Mississippi pot roast that did not come out tender. I have slow-cooked it in a crockpot and pressure-cooked it in an Instant Pot. If your roast is still tough then you need to cook it longer.

If you are cooking in a slow cooker crockpot then you need to turn it on low and let it cook for a couple more hours.

If you are pressure cooking it then you need to bring it back up to high pressure for about 30 minutes. Once the timer goes off DO NOT do a quick release of the steam (this will make your meat get tough). Instead, you want to let the steam naturally release on its own. This should take about 20 minutes. Once this is complete you are ok to open the Instant Pot and enjoy.

What is Mississippi Pot Roast Made From?

It is made from a chuck roast, pepperoncini peppers, a stick of butter, a dry ranch dressing packet, and an au jus gravy packet. I add my “secret ingredient” to it which is a little sprinkle of Tony Chachere’s Seasoning. The Tony Chachere’s is not listed in other traditional recipes. This is just my little added seasoning of choice. But do keep in mind you don’t need a whole lot of it. I also usually only use about 1/2 to 3/4 of the packet of dry ranch dressing. You can gauge this to your taste to see how you prefer it.

In addition, some people substitute the au jus packet for a french onion soup packet instead. We prefer the au jus gravy flavor. But again, you can try it both ways to see which you prefer.

What does Mississippi Roast Taste Like?

Mississippi pot roast taste like an explosion of flavor in your mouth. The meat is fall-apart tender and can be served in a variety of ways. We serve it over rice or mashed potatoes. It makes delicious sandwiches. And one of my favorites is to wrap some of the shredded meat in a tortilla. Sprinkle with some shredded mozzarella and shredded cheddar and wait a minute until the cheese melts…….. It is absolutely delicious. I think I will probably try to make some shredded beef enchiladas with the leftover meat next time! 😉
