Instant Pot Whole Chicken Recipe in Instant Pot Duo Crisp

Let me start by saying this Instant Pot Whole Chicken in Instant Pot Duo Crisp can also be made in a regular Instant Pot.  We just purchased our second Instant Pot about a month ago, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp.  It does everything that a regular Instant Pot does plus it comes with a second lid which air fries, bakes, or roasts!!

If you do not have an Instant Pot Duo Crisp you can get these same results by first pressure cooking your whole chicken in your Instant Pot and then crisping the skin with either a Mealthy Lid, Instant Pot Lid, or putting your whole chicken in the oven as the final step under the broiler for a few minutes.

How do you use the Duo Instant Pot Crisp?

The Instant Duo Crisp plus air fryer is very simple to use.  I thought my first Instant Pot Duo was just a genius invention because I could make a ton of different one-pot meals in a very short period of time.  The Instant Pot Duo Crisp just adds more options of one-pot meals that you can cook in your Instant Pot because it has all of these added features that you can do with your second lid…. The air fryer lid!!!

So we started by placing our whole chicken on the trivet in our Instant Pot with 1 ½ cup of water and pressure cooked it like you normally would.  Then after that was complete we took the pressure cooking lid off and put the air fryer lid on.  We then air fried it to give the outer skin a crispy browned texture.  The results were a delicious rotisserie-style chicken.  The inside was super moist and the outside was just perfectly crispy!!

Plus, I might add that we live in Louisiana and we love our cajun seasoning and spices.  We used our all-time favorite Tony Chachere’s Injectable Marinade and Tony Chachere’s Seasoning for this recipe.  If you do not have access to this seasoning in your area, please feel free to substitute it with whatever your favorite seasonings are.  😊

Instructions – Instant Pot Whole Chicken Recipe in Instant Pot Duo Crisp

#1.  First, inject your whole chicken with your Tony Chachere’s Injectable Marinade (or your marinade of choice).  There is a lot of marinade in these bottles so you could use it for two different meals or you can rub the outside of your chicken with any that is leftover.

#2.  Next, generously rub your Tony Chachere’s Seasoning (or your seasoning of choice) thoroughly on the outside of your whole chicken.

#3.  Then, place your trivet and 1 ½ cups of water in your Instant Pot.

#4.  Place your whole chicken on your trivet in your Instant Pot.

#5.  Close the lid and turn the steam release valve to the “sealing” position.

#6.  Then press the “Pressure Cook” button.  Next, press the “Pressure Level” button until you have selected “High Pressure”.

#7.  We use the Instant Pot guide time which states 8 minutes of high pressure per pound.  Turn the timer on for 44 minutes if you have a 5.5-pound whole chicken.  Once the pressure builds up, the timer will start counting down.

#8.  Once the timer has completed allow your Instant Pot to do a Natural Pressure Release.  This means you do not open the quick-release pressure valve and instead let the pressure release on its own.  It should take about 20 minutes.

#9.  Once the pressure has all released open the lid to your Instant Pot.  I placed a tray on the counter next to my Instant Pot.  My trivet has handles so I used this to take my chicken out of my Instant Pot and placed it on my tray.  Now you want to spray the outside of your whole chicken with your Avocado spray and sprinkle it again with extra seasoning.

#10.  Dump the remaining liquid out of your Instant Pot and wipe it down with a napkin.  Then place the inner pot, the trivet, and your whole chicken back in your Instant Pot.  (side note– you can add a little corn starch and cold-water slurry to the juices you just dumped out and simmer on the stove for a few minutes to make a gravy!!)

#11.  Now place your air fryer lid on your Instant Pot.  Set it to 400 degrees for 10 minutes.  If you like your skin extra crispy you can air fry it for a second round at 400 degrees for another 10 minutes again!!

#12.  That’s it!  You can now serve your delicious Instant Pot Whole Chicken!  Enjoy!
